The Goldendoodle

what is a goldendoodle?

Why a Goldendoodle?

What is a Goldendoodle?
A Goldendoodle is a hybrid mix between a poodle and golden retriever. Like many other "designer" dogs, the Goldendoodle is not yet a breed of its own. However, there are many benefits to a Hybrid dog. The Goldendoodle is a versatile dog. It is affectionate and gentle making it a great choice for a family pet. Another perk is that the Goldendoodle is also low to no shedding. Goldendoodles also excel in working areas, such as, guide dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs and sniffer dogs. Many also excel in agility. Goldendoodles get along well with everyone and are not a guard dog. They daily contact with their family and are not suited as a kennel dog. They are a great choice for people with allergies. However, please note that a Goldendoodle does require weekly brushing and a regular grooming schedule. This is to keep them from becoming matted which is extremely uncomfortable and painful. A properly kept Goldendoodle will be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks. Goldendoodles generally get along excellent with children and other pets, provided that proper introductions are made. Goldendoodles ARE NOT lap dogs, they require positive training from the very start as well as at the very least, 60 minutes of exercise.
Goldendoodle Sizes
At "Doodles on the Ponderosa" we breed Standard sized of Goldendoodles.

Standard size ranges from 20-24 inches tall and 50-75lbs. The range of size depends on which dam and sire we've chosen to use for a particular breeding.

The difference between F1-F1b
What is F1 and F1b you ask? This refers to the generation within the breeding.

The First Generation is referred to as F1, the F1 is the result in breeding a Golden Retriever to a Poodle. This makes the hybrid
50% Golden Retriever and 50 % Poodle. The F1 can be either a non-shedder or a light shedder. They are usually compatible to families with allergies. Most have a more shaggy coat with lose curls. However there is no way to guarantee the coat type.

The F1b is a backcross of a F1 Goldendoodle and Poodle. This makes the hybrid 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. These dogs have a higher success rate for non-shedding and are suitable to families with more severe allergies. Please note that generally the F1b has a curlier coat than the F1.

Coat Color
Although "golden" is the most common color the Goldendoodle can come in many other colors. Color depends on the color Poodle in your lines and the genetics. Here at Doodles on the Ponderosa we like to mix up the colors a bit! We love having multi color litters! We often have black, gold and sometimes brindle colored pups!
